RHYTHMIC NEWS

The girls are continuing to work more on skills now, as we build up to the competitive season, and the Nationals in July.  The results from Snugs were pleasing and show we are on track.

RHYTHMIC GYMNAST OF THE MONTH:   STELLA HOLLERAN

Stella has made great strides in her Hoop work, which was not only noted by all her coaches, but, by a marked improvement in her performance at SNUGS.

ARTISTIC NEWS

In the artistic section we continue to work on polishing the routines for Glasgow, as this represents the culmination of 4 years hard work. The results from Snugs were encouraging and it was nice to see them competing again, as this was the 1st available event of the year for the special needs group.

The club also sends ‘Get Well’ wishes to Johnathon Marsh, who has, today, been in hospital for an operation. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back in training soon.

We must also congratulate Elaine Morris who, (along with myself), passed her Artistic Assistant Coach Exam up in Wigan last month. Also, many thanks to the gymnasts who travelled to Wigan to help with the exams or joined in with the new group

Gymnast of the Month for April:  Rachel Roche and Kirsty Roberts.

Rachel has made great progress in all areas but most notably her beam skills, she competed on the high beam at Snugs and has been a pleasure to teach;

Kirsty has, over the last month, worked really hard on focusing skills, and as a result, has shown an improvement in her all-round skills.

GLASGOW – NATIONAL GAMES 2005

& SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH RUN

We are now on T-54 days and counting. We have one further squad training session at Park Rd, to attend; This final session takes place on Sunday 19th June, again from 10 – 4.

All members of the North West Squad must attend – coaches, escorts and gymnasts alike.

However before then we have an exciting event to look forward to - the Special Olympics ‘Flame of Hope’ will be arriving in the region on its way to Glasgow.  The Torch will be arriving in Manchester at 9:30am on the morning of Saturday June 11th and is being met by Amir Khan, David James and the Lord Mayor of Manchester, before continuing its journey to the Bolton Arena where a day of special events are being planned after a ‘Fun Run’ which starts at 12 noon prompt, at the arrival of the flame in the arena.

We would like as many gymnasts, families and supporters to get behind this event – but especially those who are in the NW Team. This is a great opportunity to raise awareness, not only of Special Olympics but of our gymnasts and their abilities.

The ‘fun run’ is open to everyone and although it costs £3 per person to enter all entrants will receive a free commemorative tee-shirt.

We hope that all the gymnasts going to Glasgow will attend both venues and maps to both venues will be available next week. As this is a Fun event, this would be a great opportunity for our mainstream group to support their special needs team mates whilst having fun so please do your best!

Please return your attendance/non-attendance slips by next week.

BROOKFIELDS FUN DAY

The planned ‘Fun Day’ at Bowers Park Pub has been cancelled because the new manager is unwilling to accommodate us. We are looking for an alternative venue for the day, so please still keep free Bank holiday Monday 3oth May. As previously requested, should your gymnast not be able to attend the display, please let us know ASAP. ALL Gymnasts are involved.

SCOTTIsh GYMFEST 2005

Whilst we were in Milton Keynes, The National Disabilities Display Team were in Irvine, Scotland attending the Scottish Gymfest. Both Philippa and Kemlyn enjoyed the weekend of displays and by all accounts it was the teams best display yet!  Well Done both of you.

SPONSORED CIRCUIT FROM HELL

Just a last reminder that the CIRCUIT FROM HELL takes place this Friday 11th March from 8pm. Again we are asking every gymnast to send a representative to complete the same circuit as our gymnasts regularly and to raise money for the club.

Some of our parents are already in training, with Kevin Marsh and Paul Appleton having already done their circuit, along with the gymnasts last Friday! Please do your bit. Representatives can be parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, a neighbour – in fact any poor sole! Don’t forget, if you are not doing the circuit please raise sponsorship for someone else (and let us know if you are not coming, please).

Should you need more Sponsor forms please just ask!

CLUB TRAINING SESSION - PARK ROAD

Sunday 20th March 11am - 1pm

The training session is intended for all performance/siblings group gymnasts to gain benefit from a full working competition gym, which is the home to countless champions, including Beth Tweddle. Please let us know if you cannot attend. Gymnasts to arrive by 10:45 to be ready for an 11am prompt start. Please note the change to the usual time.

SNUGS COMPETITION:

Friday 29th April - Monday 2nd May

The above competition was announced in the last newsletter but due to lack of response we have extended the deadline for entries until Monday 14th March. As stated last month the event takes place in Milton Keynes over the May Day Bank Holiday (leaving Fri 29th returning home Monday 2nd May). All gymnasts must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for this competition. We anticipated the room costs to be no more than £30 per room per night, with limited space on the minibus for non-drivers at a cost of £10 per head.

MERSEYSIDE GYMNASTICS VOLUNTARY COMPETITION

SUNDAY 17th April

The above competition is available to to all members of the siblings group aged 6 and over, and takes place at Tessaro Gym Club, Southport. As the date clashes with our next squad training session for Glasgow, parents will have to transport their children to and from the event and remain responsible for them throughout - as is usual in mainstream events anyway. Any gymnasts wishing to enter the competition please let me know by 21st March at the latest; also any gymnasts requiring club leotards - please let me know.

AGM & PARENTS NIGHT - 2005

Just another reminder that this years Annual General Meeting takes place at Upton Comunity Centre on Wednesday April 6th starting at 7:15, and after the conclussion of the AGM, we will hold our parents night.

Please do your best to attend, this is the best way to hear about the clubs progress and, during parents evening, the coaches plans and aims, competitions etc involving your gymnasts.

If you know you cannot attend, please let us know so we are not waiting for people to arrive!

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

The meeting of the fundraising committee - arranged for Wed 23rd February, was disappointing as no one turned up – and only one person sent apologies. As we are so close to the National Games we do need to use this to promote the clubs activities and raise funds for the rest of the year’s events.

We will try again on Wednesday 23rd March, however, as it is during the Easter school holidays, if you are going away, please let me know ASAP.

Highlights of the January Newsletter:

WELCOME BACK

first let me start by wishing you all a happy new year, 2005 – where do the years go!

Last week I sent home forms to check we have everyone current and most up-to-date medical and emergency contact details. If you did not receive one please ask for one, it is important that we have this information. For everyone who did receive the letter can you please complete it (including the section to register for competitive or recreational gymnastics) and return it to me, Ruth or Andy, asap.

Can we also ask parents to please remember to inform us if a gymnast will not be attending gym. Whilst we do appreciate that there are times when illness, family commitments etc make it difficult to attend gym, it would help to plan sessions and arrange adequate coaches if we know which gymnasts are/are not attending training, before the session starts. We really would appreciate your help in this matter.

GLASGOW – NATIONAL GAMES 2005

Just a reminder to parents of those gymnasts selected for the North West Team at Special Olympics Glasgow Games, that the parental contribution is £75 per gymnast. This money will be due on/by Wed 6th April – when the club needs to pay the last installment of the total cost to Special Olympics. Any problems, let us know asap.

There will be a further meeting for parents of gymnasts going to Glasgow at 5:15 on Monday 31st January. It is important that parents attend, so if you do have a problem with this time/date, please let me know asap.

NORTH WEST SQUAD TRAINING SESSION:

All members of the NW Team for Glasgow are expected to attend a squad training session at Park Rd Sports Centre, Liverpool on Sunday 30th Jan from 10am – 3:45pm, Rhythmic Gymnasts 10am – 12:30pm.

Please ensure gymnasts have ample drinks (non fizzy) and a packed lunch.

Cost for this session is £3 per gymnast.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS HOME COUNTRIES

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

For the first time, there is to be an international team event between England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales, which will take place at the Welsh Institute for Sport in Cardiff in April.

Nominations for Team England were carefully considered and the Team was announced last week. We are pleased to announce that Kemlyn has been selected for the Mens team and Marie has been chosen as the reserve for the Womens team.

This is another tremendous achievement for both gymnasts and the club, and I am sure you will all join with me in congratulating them both.

SPONSORED CIRCUIT FROM HELL

As it was such a success last year, the sponsored circuit from will return and this year we are holding the event on Friday 11th March from 8pm. Again we are asking each gymnast to send a representative to complete the same circuit as our gymnasts regularly and to raise money for the club.

If you cannot get a representative (parent, guardian, sister, uncle Tom Cobbley) to do the circuit for you please raise sponsorship for another participant. Sponsor forms will be out

next month along with the next Newsletter. Please do your bit – and get in training now!

GYMNAST OF THE MONTH

As December was a short month, and most of it was spent practicing the dances for Presentation Night, there was not a Gymnast of the Month for December. The Feature will return this month and will be announced in the next edition.

Here are the Highlights of the December Newsletter:

GYMNAST OF THE MONTH

Our gymnast of the month for November is MARIE WILSON. Marie has impressed her coaches over the last month with her enthusiasm, effort and commitment, especially during the last training session at Park Rd, the results of which were shown in Jersey.

JERSEY SPORTS ASOCIATION FOR THE DISABLED GAMES

The Games took place in the Fort Regent Centre in St Helier Jersey on Saturday & Sunday 20th/21st November.

We arrived at the Shakespeare Hotel on Thursday late afternoon – after a slight flight delay. Friday was spent giving the team a tour of the island and, after our evening meal, an early night ready for the early start to the competition – our transport picking everyone up at 8am prompt.

After the competition on Saturday, the gymnasts and most coaches, attended a disco held at the West Park Hotel, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Meanwhile Ruth and Andy were invited to attend the Jersey Sport for Disabled Civic Reception and their islands Annual Sports Awards Dinner. After these events, everyone returned to the Shakespeare and to bed ready for the next days competition.

After the conclusion of the competition the gymnasts were treated to a trip to Jersey Gold and Activity Center and then on to Corbiere to see the lighthouse by moonlight to finish the day.

Monday morning, after packing was complete, we went to Jersey Potteries and returned to the hotel just in time for our airport transfer.  An exhausting but enjoyable trip was had by all.

Competition wise, the highlights of the comp included:

Casey-Leigh Shard – Gold Overall

Marie Wilson – Silver Overall

Mike Johnson – Bronze Overall

and Phil Morris, who completed a competitive 6 piece event for the first time ever!

For Full Results – please see the results section.

MERSEYSIDE 2-PIECE ‘SETS’ COMPETITION

The competition was held yesterday (Dec 5th) at Park Road Sports Centre, Liverpool. It was the second time our gymnasts have competed in this major ‘mainstream’ competition, however it was the first time that the members of our sibling group had entered any competition, and some of their groups numbered 50 in total, so it really was a baptism of fire for them.

Our Rhythmic Girls also attended, and performed their routines in a display, which was well received and appreciated by the large captivate audience. Tracey and Carol performed their routines as solo items and were particularly brave in front of such a large crowd (totaling 500 people!) as was Paige Roberts who completed her first event for the club.

It was also a competition debut for all the members of the Junior Section, and again, they did so well to perform to such a large audiance.

A special note of thanks to Eileen Rooney who sat on the door taking admissions for the whole of the morning session and also to Craig Emery, who, on Saturday, traveled from his home in Stockport to collect the vaulting box from Kingsway and transport it to Park Rd, and then, on Sunday, waited until after the completion of the whole competition (7pm) to return the box to Kingsway for us. Thank you both for your help.

Highlights of the competition were:

Sibblings Group: Daniel Boardman – Bronze (Vault)

Development Group: David Pringle – 2 x Gold Medals

Lewis Ashcroft – 2 x Silver medals and

Hannah Jones – 2 x Bronze medals and impressing her coaches (Elaine and Keegan) with her first forward roll!

Intermediate Group:

Christopher Boardman – Gold (Floor) and Bronze (vault)

Rachel Roche – Gold (vault) and Bronze (floor)

Christopher Hughes – Silver (floor) Bronze (vault)

Ella Emery  - Bronze (vault)
